The Pause
An entrepreneur. Smart, motivated. We worked together until he could hold any conversation confidently. Then: "Let's put things on pause. Business, family, too much going on."
It wasn't the first time. I'd heard this before — from good students who were genuinely engaged.
"Let's do it without the textbook this time. At some point it just became predictable."
The Experiment
I wrote a lesson for myself. Something I actually needed to think about. Sent it over: "I've gone philosophical. You up for it?" A smile back: "Of course."
We talked as equals. At some point I stopped being the teacher and became the person thinking alongside him.
"My brain is actually boiling. That was something else."
The Diagnosis
I wrote to former students who had gone quiet after B1+/B2. Around 80% said the same thing: at some point the drive disappeared. It all became predictable.
They never told their teachers. They just left — blaming the schedule.
They don't leave English. They leave the format.
